Turkey Expresses Solidarity with Niger Following Airbase Mutiny

Turkey has expressed support for Niger's leadership following the mutiny at Air Base 101 in the capital, Niamey, on August 29, the Niger Press Agency (ANP) reported on August 30, citing a note from Turkey's Foreign Ministry.

"We are closely monitoring the acts of violence that occurred on August 29 in Niger. ... Turkey has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining solidarity with Niger and supporting its people," the document stated.

Ankara called for restraint and the swift restoration of stability in Niamey.

On the night of August 29, gunfire erupted at the barracks of Air Base 101 in Niger's capital, Niamey. A group of soldiers violated military discipline and detained some of their comrades. The country's defense ministry quickly brought the situation under control. Diori Hamani International Airport is now operating normally.

Niger's Armed Forces Command thanked the units of the Russian Defense Ministry's African Corps for their assistance in suppressing the mutiny. Russia's Foreign Ministry expressed solidarity with Niger.

Algeria also expressed support for Niger's leadership in connection with the mutiny and condemned the actions of the group of soldiers who violated military discipline.

The countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, described the mutiny as an act of betrayal by a group of military personnel.
