South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will participate in an extraordinary BRICS summit scheduled to be held online on September 8. This was confirmed by the spokesperson for the South African leader, Vincent Magwenya, in a statement to TASS.
"Ramaphosa will take part in the BRICS summit on September 8, which will be held via video conference," Magwenya said.
According to him, the initiative for the meeting came from Brazil. Preparations for the summit have been underway for over a month, including telephone conversations among the leaders of several BRICS countries. During these talks, the heads of state discussed the global economic situation and the impact of U.S. tariff policies.
The previous BRICS summit took place on July 6-7 in Rio de Janeiro. During the summit, member countries adopted a final declaration, reaffirming their "commitment to the BRICS spirit" and "improving the global governance system." They also called for "ensuring timely and fair geographical representation in the UN Secretariat and other international organizations" and condemned the imposition of unilateral sanctions.
On August 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Ramaphosa, during which he shared the outcomes of the Russia-U.S. summit in Alaska. Ramaphosa expressed support for diplomatic efforts aimed at peacefully resolving the Ukrainian crisis.
