The South African government has approved a bid to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix in the country starting in 2027, according to a statement from the office of the South African president.
"The Cabinet has approved the bid to host the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Kyalami for a period of three years, beginning in 2027. The bid is fully funded by reputable South African private sector entities and, if successful, will contribute to job creation and economic development," the release stated.
The Kyalami circuit in Gauteng province was opened in 1961. From 1967 to 1993, it hosted the South African Grand Prix.
"The very opportunity for South Africa to submit a bid to host the prestigious Formula 1 Grand Prix underscores the country's role as a key player on the global stage and reflects confidence in the nation," the government emphasized.
In December 2024, Rwandan President Paul Kagame announced that Rwanda had also submitted a bid to host a Grand Prix and was actively negotiating with Formula 1.
