Republic of Congo Announces Candidacy for UN Security Council Seat

The Republic of Congo has called on African states to support its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2030–2031 term, announced Foreign Minister Constant-Serge Bonda, as reported by the state news agency ADIAC.

"The Republic of Congo has decided to present its candidacy for the position of non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2030–2031 period. The elections will take place in 2029. Given the pan-African vocation of the Republic of Congo, its diplomacy, and President Denis Sassou Nguesso's unwavering commitment to serving Africa and our Union, we request your valuable support," the minister stated.

The announcement was made ahead of the opening of the African Union Executive Council, where participants are discussing issues of sustainable access to drinking water and sanitation, preparation of the AU budget for 2027, implementation of the African Union Agenda 2063, and the organization's financing mechanisms.

As noted by the Congolese Foreign Ministry, the candidacy reflects the country's commitment to continuing its course of promoting dialogue, peace, international cooperation, and African integration. If elected, Congo intends to represent the interests of African states in the body responsible for maintaining international peace and security.

Earlier in July, Uganda put forward former UN Deputy Secretary-General and former Foreign Minister Olara Otunnu as a candidate for the position of UN Secretary-General.
