The number of participating nations in the Africa Cup of Nations will be increased from 24 to 28 teams, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe announced at a press conference, Reuters reports.
He did not specify how the tournament format would change with the addition of four extra teams or when the innovation would take effect. However, Motsepe stated that this demonstrates his organization's "commitment to world-class football."
In December of last year, the CAF president announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) would be held every four years rather than every two years. According to him, this is necessary to synchronize the competition with the global football cycle, and the change will take effect from 2028.
