Egypt and Cyprus signed a framework agreement on natural gas cooperation on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026) in New Cairo, in the presence of Presidents Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Nikos Christodoulides, Egypt's State Information Service reported.

The document was signed by Egypt's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, and Cyprus's Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, Michalis Damianou.

The Cypriot president emphasized the importance of the new agreement amid regional challenges. Energy is a key element of the long-term partnership between Egypt and the European Union, Christodoulides stated.

According to the official spokesman for the Egyptian president, Mohamed el-Shennawy, the sides held bilateral talks before the signing, focusing on developing cooperation, primarily in the energy sector.

The Egyptian president underscored Cairo's interest in deepening cooperation to elevate relations with Cyprus to the level of "strategic partnership," given the "close coordination" at regional and international platforms.

Earlier in March, Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced that the country was introducing measures to reduce energy consumption amid rising fuel prices due to the conflict in the Middle East.
