The Ministry of Defense of Libya and the Ministry of Defense of Turkey have signed an agreement aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the Libyan army. This was announced by the press office of Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU).
According to the statement, "The Libyan Ministry of Defense has signed a cooperation agreement with its Turkish counterpart to enhance the capabilities of the Libyan army. This agreement is a key component of the ongoing institutional reform program led by the Ministry."
Libya's Deputy Minister of Defense, Abdussalam Zubi, made an official visit to Ankara, the Turkish capital, where he held talks with Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler and his deputy. The visit was part of ongoing efforts to deepen military cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement covers advanced military training, sharing of expertise, as well as technical and logistical support—all intended to boost the Libyan army's combat readiness and professionalism.
After the signing, Zubi emphasized that this step is part of the Defense Ministry's broader plan to train and develop the Libyan army's personnel. He also praised the strategic partnership between Libya and Turkey in this domain.
The Turkish side confirmed its continued commitment to supporting Libya in implementing programs to develop the country's defense sector.
Earlier in May, the United States and Libya discussed possible avenues of military cooperation during Abdussalam Zubi's visit to Washington. This trip marked the first official visit by a Libyan defense official to the Pentagon in over a decade. Talks focused on training, capacity building, and counterterrorism.
