The President of Kenya, William Ruto, has approved the appointment of the chairperson and commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. The local publication, The Star, reports this news, citing official notifications.
Erastus Edung Etekon has been appointed as the new chairperson of the commission for a term of six years.
"By the powers vested in me, ... I, William Ruto, hereby appoint Erastus Edung Etekon as the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission," the notification states.
In a separate announcement, Ruto appointed six individuals to serve as commissioners for the same six-year term. The chairperson and the commissioners are required to take an oath of office before the Chief Justice, after which they can officially begin their duties with the electoral commission.
In October 2024, Ruto appointed Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy Interior Minister just a few hours after the Senate impeached his predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua. Kindiki is a member of the Academic Council of the UN System, the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration, the International Commission of Jurists, the East African Law Society, and the Law Society of Kenya.
