Kenya Airport Workers End Strike After Reaching Agreement with Authorities

Kenyan aviation union members have reached an agreement with authorities following high-level negotiations and ended their indefinite strike on September 1, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) announced.

The talks were chaired by Transport Minister Davis Chirchir, with participation from Labour and Social Protection Minister Alfred Mutua, representatives of relevant agencies, and leaders of the KCAA, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), and the airline Jambojet. Representatives of the Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) and the Central Organization of Trade Unions Kenya (COTU-K) also took part in the discussions.

"The parties reached consensus on the next steps regarding the collective bargaining agreement between the KCAA and KAWU, the recognition agreement between KAWU and Jambojet, and the inadmissibility of victimizing employees in connection with the strike," the authority said.

According to the statement, the agreement took effect immediately; details were not provided. The country's aviation sector operations have been restored.

At the end of August, a strike by workers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Kenya's capital, Nairobi, led to delays and rescheduling of several flights. According to reports, the union's grievances included the lack of a signed collective bargaining agreement with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, as well as unsatisfactory working conditions.
