The Ethiopian government has approved a national strategy for developing a digital economy, aimed at accelerating economic growth. This was announced by the office of the country's Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed.
The "Digital Ethiopia 2030" initiative also focuses on integrating technology into all sectors of the country's economy.
"The Council [of Ministers] discussed the 'Digital Ethiopia 2030' strategy, aimed at creating new opportunities for citizens, enhancing technological capacity, expanding infrastructure, promoting effective governance, and accelerating economic growth. After a comprehensive discussion, the Council unanimously decided to implement the strategy from the date of its approval," the statement read.
The strategy is a continuation of the "Digital Ethiopia 2025" program launched in June 2020.
Additionally, during the meeting, the Ethiopian government approved four bilateral agreements: with China on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, and with China, Cuba, and South Africa on extradition, to enhance cooperation in crime prevention.
Earlier in November, Ethiopian Minister of Innovation and Technology Belete Molla, speaking at a conference dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS), announced that his ministry, in partnership with Russian counterparts, is implementing programs aimed at digital transformation and the adoption of advanced technologies to build a resilient Ethiopian economy.
