Ethiopia has launched a National Dialogue Conference aimed at resolving political and societal differences, the AMN news agency reported, citing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The conference was organized by the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission (ENDC) and is regarded by the authorities as an important step toward resolving differences through peaceful dialogue and strengthening national unity.
The forum is being attended by representatives from regions, religious communities, civil society, youth, and other societal groups. In total, over 4,000 participants from across the country have been announced.
"Ethiopia's deeply rooted political and social challenges cannot be resolved through temporary measures. An inclusive, transparent, and fact-based national dialogue remains the most sustainable path to long-term solutions," said ENDC head Mesfin Araya.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, speaking at the opening of the forum, called it a historic opportunity for the country.
"We are at a moment where we can break the vicious cycle in Ethiopia's political path — a cycle that begins with incendiary rhetoric and ends in violent actions — and replace it with dialogue and discussion," the prime minister stated.
Participants are expected to discuss issues of national identity, governance structure, social cohesion, anti-corruption measures, democratic institutions, human rights, and post-conflict reconciliation.
Earlier in July, Abiy Ahmed accused the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) rebels of attempting to provoke a new war.
