In a landmark initiative, African leaders and global financiers gathered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to pledge an impressive $35 billion towards electrification, marking the largest investment in Africa's electric power generation to date. This effort, supported by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, aims to electrify 300 million people over the next six years, with a particular emphasis on deploying solar mini-grids to underserved communities.

World Bank President Ajay Banga highlighted the vital connection between electricity availability and economic development, underscoring electrification as crucial for job creation, healthcare improvement, and regional stability. Yet, skepticism persists due to the persistent challenges characterizing Africa's power sector.

A cautionary example is evident in Tanzania, where Husk Power Systems, a leading solar mini-grid developer, was forced to withdraw due to unsustainable government pricing policies. Despite Tanzania's potential as a promising market, misaligned incentives have impeded progress, underscoring the necessity for effective policies to fulfill the ambitious objectives set at the summit.
