In 2024, the trade volume between Nigeria and China surpassed $20 billion, underscoring the robust trade relations between the two nations. However, this figure also represented a notable 11.5% decline compared to 2023. At a Lunar New Year event in Abuja, Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai expressed a desire for even stronger trade ties and reiterated Beijing's commitment to implementing the agreements from the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Ambassador Yu Dunhai emphasized Nigeria's strategic importance within BRICS and highlighted its role as the largest recipient of Chinese engineering contracts in Africa. Additionally, China's Consul-General in Lagos, Yan Yuqing, pointed out China's 5% GDP growth, which has driven global recovery efforts and bolstered bilateral initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Despite the decline in trade volume, the partnership between Beijing and Abuja continues to flourish across various sectors, including infrastructure, technology, and trade. This ongoing collaboration underlines the enduring and dynamic relationship between Nigeria and China.
