In Zimbabwe, the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union – Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF) has resolved to extend the term of incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa beyond his current mandate. This was announced by the party's Secretary for Legal Affairs, Ziyambi Ziyambi, following the 22nd ZANU–PF People's Conference.
"The conference unanimously resolved to extend the presidential term of President Emmerson Mnangagwa beyond 2028. Delegates affirmed that the president's visionary leadership, marked by stability, economic recovery, and transformative national development, should continue to guide the nation beyond the constitutional term limit," the statement read.
The conference also directed the party and government to undertake "necessary legal, constitutional, and administrative measures" to ensure the implementation and enforcement of the party's resolution.
This development follows a February media report which suggested that Mnangagwa would step down after his current term ends in 2028, having reportedly declined a proposal from the ruling ZANU–PF party to extend his term by two additional years.
