US Re-Detains Egyptian Family After Release from Custody

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has re-detained an Egyptian family — a mother and five children — just days after their release from a detention center in Texas, the Guardian reports, citing the family's attorney, Eric Lee.

According to the publication, Hayam El-Gamal and her children were detained and faced deportation over an alleged violation of a court order.

The family's lawyers subsequently filed an emergency motion to block deportation, which was granted by federal judge Fred Biery, who had previously ordered the family's release. It remains unclear which court order the family allegedly violated.

"This is a very dangerous situation — an absolute violation of the separation of powers," Lee said.

The family arrived in the United States in 2022 and applied for asylum. In June 2025, Hayam El-Gamal was detained in connection with the case of her ex-husband, Mohamed Sabri Soliman, who is alleged to have thrown Molotov cocktails into a crowd at an event supporting hostages in Gaza. More than ten people were injured in the attack, and one woman later died.

The mother and children spent approximately ten months in a Texas detention center, marking one of the longest detentions for families during Donald Trump's second presidential term. Attorneys reported inadequate conditions of confinement, including denial of medical care.

Earlier in April, media outlets citing the US State Department reported that nearly 5,000 Afrikaners (descendants of early European settlers) had relocated from South Africa to the United States during Donald Trump's second administration, amid allegations of "unlawful discrimination" against them in their home country.
