South African President Appoints New Minister of Higher Education

 South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Buti Kgwaridi Manamela as the new Minister of Higher Education and Vocational Training, according to an official statement from the President's office on X.

Buti Manamela steps into this role after serving as Deputy Minister for Higher Education since 2019. His promotion comes in accordance with Article 91 (2) of the South African Constitution, following the departure of the previous minister.

Dr. Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the former Premier of KwaZulu-Natal Province, has been appointed to succeed Manamela as Deputy Minister for Higher Education.

🏛️ Broader Government Reshuffle
These moves are part of a broader reshuffling of the South African government. Recently, President Ramaphosa temporarily appointed Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe as acting Minister of Police. This shift is connected to the establishment of a special judicial commission to investigate the infiltration of organized crime groups into law enforcement and intelligence services.

The appointment of Manamela and Dube-Ncube underscores the government's intention to strengthen the higher education sector and address pressing challenges, such as skills shortages and access to quality education.
