The Guinean authorities have closed 1,724 industrial enterprises for failing to meet safety and quality standards, according to an open letter from the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Small Business published by the Kumpital news agency.

The decision was made to "protect consumers, ensure a safe industrial environment, and safeguard public health." Products made by these businesses have been removed from the market as a result.
A significant number of the closed enterprises are bottled water manufacturers. According to Ousmane Keita, President of the Guinean Consumer Union, there have been numerous complaints about water sold on the market without clear quality control. "We have long warned that lots of water sold locally has unknown origins, which sparked health concerns. We are pleased that the ministry is finally taking this seriously," Keita told RFI.

The Ministry reminded business owners about the official procedures required to legalize their activity and announced that an official list of approved operating businesses, especially in the bottled water industry, would be released soon.
This large-scale closure has fueled concerns about rising unemployment in Guinea. So far, business representatives have chosen not to comment, waiting first for a scheduled meeting with the authorities.
