South African state-owned transport and logistics company Transnet plans to expand the Port of Durban by 22.4 hectares, local newspaper Business Day reported, citing Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA).

The new area will be created by dredging and depositing approximately 4 million cubic meters of soil.

"TNPA proposes to build a new container terminal ... capable of handling 1.8 million [containers] per year. The reclaimed land will be used for the construction of a new quay wall, berthing for container ships, accommodating very large crude carriers (VLCCs), operating port cranes, and container storage," the statement read.

The project is aimed at increasing the capacity of the country's key port hub.

The project is being implemented as part of Transnet's strategy to increase the total capacity of the Port of Durban to 10–11 million containers per year and to raise cargo turnover to 250 million tons. The expansion is expected to reduce logistics costs and improve supply chain efficiency.

In March, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a state of the nation address that authorities plan to invest over $62.4 billion in infrastructure over three years. Ramaphosa added that attracting public investment would facilitate the accelerated implementation of projects in energy, water supply, and transportation.
