Prime Minister of Togo Meets with Sahel Foreign Ministers

The foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali — Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, Bakary Yaou Sangaré, and Abdoulaye Diop — met with the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé, in Lomé. The sides discussed Togo's adopted strategy for interaction with the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) for 2026-2028, Mali's Foreign Ministry reports.

The Sahel foreign ministers expressed gratitude to the Togolese leadership and supported the initiative to launch a strategy aimed at strengthening peace, security, and sustainable development in the subregion.

The AES countries also noted the "important efforts of the Togolese authorities in their constructive approach and constant political dialogue to facilitate the resolution of multifaceted challenges at the regional level."

The ministry noted that Togo's new strategy is "an important document for strengthening political dialogue with the AES, peaceful coexistence and good neighborliness, socio-economic exchange, strengthening security cooperation, the fight against terrorism, and regional and international diplomacy."

Earlier in April, the Togolese government presented a new strategy for interaction with the Sahel region for 2026–2028. Among its objectives are the development of political dialogue with Sahel countries, the strengthening of cooperation between states in the region, and the creation of a platform for exchanging views between governments, international organizations, and civil society.
