A federal court in Nigeria has sentenced former Minister of Energy Saleh Mamman to 75 years in prison over a case involving the misappropriation of funds totaling more than €21 million, Nigeria's anti-corruption agency (EFCC) reported.
"In 2019 in Abuja, ... while serving as Minister of Energy, Mamman conspired with other ministry officials and some private companies to indirectly misappropriate a total sum of 33.8 billion naira (over $24.6 million) ... allocated by the Nigerian federal government for the Mambilla and Zungeru hydroelectric power plant projects," court documents stated.
The former minister failed to appear at the hearing, following which the judge ordered the convicted individual's arrest and transfer to a correctional facility, as well as the confiscation of his assets and seized funds.
Earlier in May, a court in Tunisia sentenced former Minister of Justice Noureddine Bhiri to 20 years in prison for aiding terrorists.
