Media: Republic of Congo Requests New IMF Financing Program

The Republic of Congo has officially submitted a request to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a new financing program, Reuters reports, citing three unnamed sources.

According to the agency's sources, representatives of the Congolese authorities held a series of meetings with investors on the sidelines of the IMF and World Bank spring meetings in Washington, where financing issues were discussed.

An official representative of the Congolese government declined to comment. The IMF also did not respond to the agency's request.

"Growth [of the Congolese economy] in 2025 remains significantly below potential levels, as weak public investment and energy supply disruptions put pressure on the non-resource sector, and medium-term growth prospects have weakened for similar reasons," the IMF said in a report.

In March 2025, the country completed its previous credit program. Under that program, the fund allocated approximately 324 million Special Drawing Rights (about $430 million at the time) over three years.

In January, an extraordinary summit of heads of state and government of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community (CEMAC) was held in Brazzaville, dedicated to analyzing the economic, financial, and monetary situation in the subregion.
