Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro to participate in the BRICS summit, according to TASS. Lavrov is leading the Russian delegation at the event. His agenda includes participating in the work of the association's multilateral structures, and he is expected to hold several bilateral meetings.
As previously reported by Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Russian leader Vladimir Putin will join the summit via video link. The BRICS summit is taking place in Rio de Janeiro from July 6-7. The theme of the meeting is "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance." Media reports suggest that the joint resolution following the talks will include the member countries' support for the candidacies of Brazil, India, and one African nation as permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has already held talks with the leaders of Nigeria and Ethiopia on the sidelines of the summit.
