Ghana will present a resolution to the United Nations General Assembly calling for the recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity. This was announced by the country's President, John Dramani Mahama, during his address at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government.

"Ghana will table a resolution before the UN General Assembly in March this year with the aim of achieving global recognition of the transatlantic slave trade as one of the gravest crimes against humanity," the Ghanaian leader stated during his speech, which was broadcast by Woezor TV.

Mahama also called for decisive action to "not delay justice," despite potential criticism about "turning memory into politics."

The 39th AU Summit is taking place on February 14-15 in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa, bringing together African leaders to discuss continental priorities.

This initiative builds on Mahama's previous calls for African agency. In November of last year, the Ghanaian president urged African nations to "take their destiny into their own hands" and more actively confront modern challenges threatening stability on the continent.

The proposed resolution seeks to address the historical injustice of the transatlantic slave trade, which forcibly displaced millions of Africans over several centuries and whose lasting socioeconomic impacts continue to resonate across the diaspora and the African continent. If adopted, the resolution would represent a significant step in the global acknowledgment of this historical tragedy.
