In April 2025, the cost of a basic food basket in South Africa increased by nearly 100 rand compared to the previous month. According to Business Report, citing the Household Affordability Index calculated by the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PMBEJD), the price hike affected 24 out of 44 essential food items.
Notable increases were seen in the prices of several basic products: potatoes rose by 6%, onions by 11%, beef by 7%, fish by 7%, tomatoes by 26%, carrots by 20%, spinach by 7%, cabbage by 6%, green peppers by 7%, bananas by 7%, and oranges by 18%.
Only two goods saw significant price drops (of more than 5%): white nuts fell by 7% and apples decreased by 6%.
Debt Rescue CEO Neil Roets commented that a growing number of consumers in South Africa are turning to short-term loans in order to afford basic groceries.
The cost of essential household hygiene products has also risen, reaching 1,033.09 rand—a 2.6% increase over the past year.
PMBEJD calculations show that after accounting for transport and electricity expenses, the average working family of four is left with just 1,813.11 rand, while the cost of the basic food basket for a family of this size reached 3,817.78 rand in April 2025.
Experts note that food prices are continuing to rise even though overall consumer inflation has softened, largely due to lower fuel prices.
