First International Cowboy Day Celebrated in Africa

2025-07-29-10.07.51

Kenya hosted the first-ever International Cowboy Day celebration in Africa, attracting hundreds of participants. This event took place at the racetrack and golf park in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, as reported by The Guardian.

The highlight of the celebration was a performance by local country artist Sir Elvis, whose real name is Elvis Otieno, along with his band, Urban Cowboys. Many attendees dressed in western-style outfits, featuring classic cowboy boots and wide-brimmed hats. The festivities included traditional American cowboy line dancing, which was beautifully blended with the traditional dances of various Kenyan tribes.

One festival-goer shared with AFP, "In a world filled with chaos and drama, country music is the only thing that makes sense to me and helps me find peace."

International Cowboy Day is traditionally celebrated on the fourth Saturday of July. Since its inception in 2005, it has been recognized in 14 states across the United States, aiming to honor the contributions of cowboys to the cultural development of North American countries.

Earlier in July, a pan-African music festival, FESPAM, was held in Congo.
