Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his Cypriot counterpart Nikos Christodoulides signed a joint declaration during a meeting in Nicosia on April 24, elevating bilateral relations to the level of strategic partnership, the Egyptian presidency's statement read.

"The meeting began with the two presidents signing a joint declaration raising relations between Egypt and Cyprus to the level of strategic partnership," the statement said.

El-Sisi emphasized the importance of developing cooperation in trade, investment, labor, tourism, and energy. The sides also discussed a project to link Cyprus's gas fields with Egypt's infrastructure for domestic consumption and export.

The Cypriot leader, for his part, underscored the importance of coordination with Egypt on regional security issues and praised Cairo's efforts in combating illegal migration.

Additionally, the presidents exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East, including Iran, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank. They reaffirmed the need to implement agreements to end the war in Gaza and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.

That same day, a consultative meeting was held in Nicosia with the participation of leaders from Arab countries and EU states, as well as European Union leadership. Discussions focused on ways to reduce tensions in the region and strengthen Mediterranean partnership. El-Sisi delivered a speech emphasizing the need for fair and balanced solutions to regional conflicts, including the Iranian, Syrian, and Lebanese fronts.

In March, Egypt's State Information Service reported that Cairo and Nicosia had signed a framework agreement on natural gas cooperation on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPES 2026) in New Cairo, in the presence of the two presidents.
