A Swiss auction house has sold a blue-green diamond mined in Central Africa for nearly €15 million, setting a record price for this type of diamond, RFI reports, citing Christie's auction house in Geneva.
The largest known diamond to date with a unique blue-green color, weighing 5.50 carats, has been named the "Ocean Dream."
"This combination of blue and green is practically unheard of in the history of diamonds," explains journalist and expert Hervé Deventre.
RFI notes that the precious stone was first sold in 2014. With an initial estimate of €11 million, the stone was sold for €14.8 million. The buyer requested to remain anonymous.
In December of last year, customs officers at Frankfurt am Main Airport in Germany seized more than 11,200 diamonds from a 53-year-old passenger from Angola.
