The African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) have called on the warring parties in Sudan to immediately cease hostilities amid the deteriorating situation in North Kordofan state and other parts of the country, according to statements from both organizations.

AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat expressed deep concern over the escalation of violence in and around the city of El Obeid, as well as the ongoing deterioration of the humanitarian and political-military situation across Sudan.

"The Chairperson calls on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint, and fulfill their obligations under international humanitarian law," the statement read.

Faki also emphasized the importance of accountability for all individuals involved in crimes against civilians.

IGAD issued a similar appeal. The organization expressed serious concern over the intensification of military activity in El Obeid, including the large-scale redeployment of forces and drone strikes on the city.

"Continued escalation will further diminish prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflict and exacerbate the humanitarian and security challenges facing the people of Sudan," the organization stated.

IGAD called on the parties to cease all military operations in and around El Obeid, ensure the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and comply with international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

The organization also emphasized that the conflict in Sudan has no military solution and urged the parties to begin constructive dialogue without preconditions.

Earlier in June, strikes by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels in the Sudanese city of El Obeid led to the closure of several medical facilities and water supply infrastructure.

The civil war in Sudan between the RSF and the regular army has been ongoing since April 2023.
