The Zambian government has declared a seven-day period of national mourning following the passing of the country's former president, Edgar Lungu. Southern African radio station EWN reported this announcement citing Patrick Kangwa, the spokesperson for the Cabinet.
From June 8 to June 14, all national flags will be flown at half-mast, and entertainment events will be cancelled as the nation pays its respects.
"The government of Zambia informs the nation that President Hakainde Hichilema has ordered state funerals for the sixth President, Edgar Lungu," Kangwa stated.
He also mentioned that Lungu's body will arrive in Zambia on June 11, with Belvedere Lodge in the capital, Lusaka, designated as the official site for the farewell ceremony.
Lungu passed away in Pretoria, South Africa, at the age of 68. He served as the President of Zambia from 2015 to 2016 following the death of President Michael Sata. Lungu's second term lasted from 2016 to 2021, after the country's elections. In the 2021 elections, he was succeeded by the current president, Hakainde Hichilema.
