A recent poll conducted by the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) indicates that support for the Democratic Alliance (DA) has narrowly surpassed the African National Congress (ANC), primarily due to the DA's stance against the proposed value-added tax (VAT) increase.
The poll, conducted between 27 March and 3 April 2025 among 807 registered voters, places DA support at 30.3%, slightly ahead of the ANC's 29.7%. This shift follows the recent budget impasse, which saw significant public debate over the VAT increase.
The IRR notes a marked increase in support for the DA among black voters, rising from 5% during the last elections to 18% currently. This growth appears to reflect a broader movement away from identity politics toward issues directly impacting voters' livelihoods.
IRR analyst Hermann Pretorius emphasized that the timing of the poll aligns closely with the controversy around the VAT hike, suggesting the shift in support may be temporary and specifically tied to the current economic debate.
Pretorius remarked, "This realignment of politics is likely not yet entrenched, and is likely a result of this very specific moment in time. However, it clearly indicates voters prioritizing socio-economic concerns over racial identity, marking a positive shift towards non-racialism."
Additional polling by the Brenthurst Foundation indicated broad support among South Africans for the Government of National Unity (GNU), while research by the Social Research Foundation suggested that removing President Cyril Ramaphosa could further erode ANC support in favor of the DA.
