Tanzanian and Ugandan Presidents Discuss Enhancing Transport Infrastructure for Trade Growth

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Ugandan leader Yoweri Museveni have discussed prospects for improving transport infrastructure between their countries to boost mutual trade. This was reported in a press release from the Tanzanian presidential administration following Museveni's working visit.

"As you know, landlocked countries largely depend on Tanzanian ports. We discussed how to ensure the ability to use these ports for transporting cargo [from Uganda]," Hassan stated during a press conference after the bilateral talks, as reported by the Tanzanian TV channel Clouds FM.

During the negotiations, the leaders emphasized the importance of accelerating the implementation of joint projects, including cooperation within the framework of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP). They also discussed other oil and gas pipeline projects and issues related to improving transport and logistics infrastructure for cargo shipments through Tanzania's main ports, Dar es Salaam and Tanga.

The parties also agreed to continue efforts to make greater use of railway and road infrastructure, as well as water transport on Lake Victoria, to increase bilateral trade and enhance the competitiveness of regional products on international markets.

"Even more importantly, I want to inform you that the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) program for 2025-2030 includes the construction of a railway that will connect the cities of Tanga and Musoma. From there, cargo will be transported across Lake Victoria to Uganda," the Tanzanian president reminded.

Additionally, during the meeting, the presidents discussed issues of regional security, peace in the Great Lakes region, and cooperation on multilateral platforms, including the UN and the African Union. The Tanzanian leader expressed gratitude to Uganda for its consistent support of diplomatic efforts and continued cooperation in the security sphere.

Separately, President Hassan congratulated the re-elected President Museveni on his victory in Uganda's general elections and thanked him for his contribution to strengthening regional trust.

For his part, the Ugandan president emphasized the importance of building competitive economies in the countries, developing a common market, and promoting African solidarity to confront global challenges.

This is President Museveni's first trip following his re-election to a seventh term. The 81-year-old Yoweri Museveni was re-elected as president for a seventh time on January 17, securing 71.65% of the vote in the presidential election.
