South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has dismissed Finance Minister Bak Barnaba Chol just three months after his appointment. The text of the decree was read on state television on February 23, according to Radio Tamazuj.
Salvatore Garang Mabiordit has been appointed as the new Minister of Finance. He previously held this position from 2018 to 2020, and also briefly in 2023.
This marks the ninth change of finance minister since 2020. The reasons for the resignation were not disclosed.
Additionally, Kiir relieved Monica Achol Abdel Aguek from her position as Presidential Envoy for Middle East Affairs and William Anyuon Kuol as Commissioner General of the Revenue Authority. They have been replaced by Muon Deng Ajuec and Solomon Ariik Manyok, respectively.
In September 2025, President Salva Kiir dismissed the governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, as well as three national government ministers. The new governor appointed was General Sherif Daniel Sherif, replacing Emmanuel Primo Okello, who had been appointed in November 2024.
