South Africa to Develop Support Measures for Exporters Amid New US Tariffs

South Africa's government plans to develop support measures for exporters affected by the 30% tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on the country's goods, according to a statement on the president's official site.

President Cyril Ramaphosa cautioned that the situation could lead to job losses in the automotive and agricultural sectors.

"We are finalizing a support package for vulnerable export sectors. Details will be announced soon," he stated.

Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel described the situation as a "challenging time for South Africa" and announced the launch of the Export Support Desk, a service to help companies explore alternative markets.

"We maintain open communication channels with the US. Our negotiators are ready for dialogue if Washington shows interest," the President added.

Earlier in July, President Trump declared that starting August 1, the US would impose a 30% tariff on imports from South Africa. In response, South Africa's Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe, stated that the country would seek alternative markets for its strategically important mineral resources.

South Africa attempted to be excluded from the tariff list by proposing to increase purchases of American liquefied gas and investments in the US economy. However, the initiative was overlooked by the White House.
