South Africa plans to begin construction of several nuclear power plants in 2027. This was announced by the state energy company Eskom, citing its chief nuclear energy specialist, Velaphi Ntuli.
Speaking at the Africa Energy Indaba forum, Ntuli stated that the company has an exclusive mandate for the construction of nuclear stations.
"Three sites have been identified. The plans include both water-water power reactors (VVER) and small modular reactors (SMRs), with construction start scheduled for 2027," the statement indicated.
According to the company, an important part of program preparation is engagement with local communities and the development of human resources. Specifically, the creation of specialized training centers is planned.
Earlier in March, on the sidelines of the African Energy Forum in Cape Town, state corporation Rosatom and the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa) signed a memorandum of understanding on developing personnel cooperation.
