South Africa's Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) has launched an investigation into the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) over concerns regarding corporate governance and leadership stability, the regulator announced in a press release.

"The FSCA expresses growing concern about recent developments at the PIC, particularly those relating to governance, leadership stability, transparency, and the potential impact of these developments on the integrity and confidence in one of South Africa's significant financial institutions. ... The FSCA has decided to conduct an investigation in connection with these developments at the PIC," the statement read.

The investigation was prompted by the temporary suspension of PIC CEO Patrick Dlamini and reports from an anonymous whistleblower regarding irregularities within the organization.

The corporation, for its part, emphasized that Dlamini's suspension is purely precautionary and does not constitute an acknowledgment of any wrongdoing by the CEO. The PIC also stated its readiness to cooperate with the regulator and provide all necessary information regarding the case.

The PIC is Africa's largest asset management company and the custodian of a significant portion of South Africa's state savings. It is a licensed financial services provider and falls under the regulator's supervision. The company manages assets worth over 3 trillion rand (approximately $183 billion) and is considered the largest investor on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

Earlier in July, South Africa's National Treasury temporarily froze 3.6 billion rand (over $219 million) in funding allocated to Johannesburg. The measure is related to non-compliance with legal requirements in municipal financial management.
