Military forces from Puntland, a semi-autonomous region of Somalia, successfully repelled an attack by militants linked to the Islamic State (IS), according to local outlet SONNA, citing security officials. At least 10 militants were killed during the operation, which took place in the Cal-Miskaad mountains. Government forces reported no casualties among their ranks.
In late April, Puntland security forces launched a major offensive in the Togga Miirale area and surrounding regions of Bari, resulting in the death of over 40 IS fighters during the final phase of their campaign.
Somalia has long struggled with insecurity, with the primary threats coming from the extremist groups Al-Shabaab and Islamic State. Al-Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency against Somalia's government and African Union peacekeepers since 2007, and IS-affiliated militants often compete for influence in the country's northern territories, particularly in Puntland.
While Puntland has managed to maintain relative stability compared to other regions, it continues to face sporadic attacks from militant groups. Somali authorities, with support from international partners, are intensifying efforts to restore lasting peace and eliminate terrorist threats across the country. Recent operations underscore Somalia's ongoing struggle against extremism and the continued commitment of its armed forces to ensure the safety and security of civilians.
