The Russian Foreign Ministry congratulated Tunisia on the 70th anniversary of its independence from France, which the North African state gained on March 20, 1956. The congratulatory message was published on the ministry's Telegram channel.
The USSR and Tunisia established official relations shortly after Tunisia gained independence. "In the 1960s, the USSR and Tunisia exchanged ambassadors, and progressive development of bilateral political and economic ties began. A program for training Tunisian students was launched in higher education institutions of the Soviet Union," the Russian Foreign Ministry's statement read.
The ministry noted that Russian-Tunisian relations continue to consistently strengthen, with cooperation actively developing in the agro-industrial sector, tourism, and civil defense.
"We congratulate our colleagues and the people of Tunisia on their national holiday and wish them prosperity and well-being!" the message stated.
In March 2025, the Director General of the Tunisian National Tourism Office, Helmi Houssein, said that the country's authorities are interested in regaining their share of the Russian tourism market and are seeking solutions to increase the flow of tourists from Russia.
