The military cooperation between Russia and Burkina Faso serves as an example for many other countries, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated during a meeting with his Burkinabe counterpart, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.
Lavrov emphasized that military partnership and counterterrorism efforts remain crucial areas of bilateral engagement.
"Cooperation in the military and military-technical spheres, the fight against terrorism, and other threats that unfortunately persist in this part of the African continent, also remains our top priority. The way the servicemen of our two states interact is truly an example for many others," Lavrov said.
Earlier in February, the Russian Embassy in Ouagadougou reported that Russia and Burkina Faso would sign agreements on the fundamentals of bilateral relations and the establishment of an intergovernmental commission during Traoré's visit to Moscow on February 12-13.
This high-level meeting follows recent statements by Russian Ambassador Igor Martynov, who told African Initiative in January that Burkina Faso is interested in expanding military cooperation with Russia. According to the ambassador, the Russian side is working with relevant Burkinabe institutions to train special forces and army units in modern tactical skills, while continuing military-technical cooperation.
The deepening military ties reflect the growing partnership between Moscow and Ouagadougou, as Burkina Faso's transitional authorities seek to bolster security amid ongoing jihadist insurgencies in the Sahel region.
