Chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, met with the head of the Senate of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, Abdi Hashi Abdullahi. During their talks, both sides agreed to expand interparliamentary cooperation between Russia and Somalia, according to a statement from the State Duma.
Volodin emphasized that the relationship between the two countries is built on a long-standing history, mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, and a rejection of double standards. He noted that both nations should draw on their past experiences and strengthen ties not only between their parliaments but also between their peoples. Volodin expressed hope that the dialogue between legislative bodies would become regular and systematic, highlighting that Abdullahi's visit would help further boost bilateral cooperation.
For his part, Abdullahi thanked Russia for its continued support of Somalia's independent and sovereign development. He also suggested intensifying interparliamentary contacts.
"We see continued cooperation between the Federal Assembly and our parliament as essential. We value the experience of other countries, and you possess the expertise we need," Abdullahi said.
According to the Duma, Volodin welcomed the proposal from the Somali senator.
Abdullahi also recalled the importance of Russian-Somali relations for Somalia's development, saying, "I will never forget 1974–1975, when our country was struck by a terrible drought and famine. In those times, the Soviet Union offered significant support—delivering food, assisting in the relocation of affected residents, and supplying essential equipment and technology. The Soviet Union also trained our people in restoring agriculture and livestock."
In May, a delegation of senators from Namibia visited the State Duma. Later that month, Deputy Novichkov announced that a Russian parliamentary delegation would travel to Burundi to act as election observers.
