Red Cross Reports Death of Three Volunteers in DRC Amid Early Ebola Outbreak

 The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has reported the death of three volunteers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the early stages of the Ebola outbreak, according to an IFRC press release.

"The IFRC is deeply saddened by the death of three volunteers from the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC Red Cross) who were working in the Mongbwalu branch (Djugu territory, Ituri province). We extend our sincere condolences to their families, loved ones, fellow volunteers, and colleagues. In this difficult time, we express our solidarity with the DRC Red Cross," the statement said.

It is believed that volunteers Alicana Udumusi Augustin, Cesabo Katanobo, and Adjiko Chandiru Vivian contracted the Ebola virus while handling bodies at a morgue at the end of March — at a time when the outbreak had not yet been identified. They died between May 5 and May 16.

"They were among the first known victims of this outbreak," the release stated.

Earlier in May, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified the new Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda as a public health emergency of international concern. On May 22, the WHO reported 177 deaths from the disease and more than 750 suspected cases.

In response to the Ebola outbreak in the DRC and Uganda, authorities in Zambia, Burundi, Tanzania, and Rwanda have announced measures to combat the infection.

Ebola is a severe, acute viral disease with a high fatality rate. Transmission occurs through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other bodily fluids of infected individuals, as well as with contaminated surfaces and materials.
