Pope Leo XIV will undertake his first trip to African countries as pontiff. This was announced at a press conference in Luanda by the Apostolic Nuncio to Angola (a religious position equivalent to an ambassador), Archbishop Kryspin Witold Dubiel.
"At this moment, we are preparing the plan and program for Pope Leo XIV's visit to Africa. The exact dates and program will be announced once they are finalized," noted Archbishop Dubiel, urging Angolan citizens to "actively prepare" for this event.
According to the Apostolic Nuncio, the pontiff will visit Angola in response to invitations extended by local Catholic bishops and the country's President, João Lourenço. It is not yet known which countries, besides Angola, will be included in Leo XIV's visit itinerary.
