Niger's Defense and Security Forces (FDS) eliminated nine militants during counterterrorism operations in the first half of August, the country's Press Agency (ANP) reported on August 17, citing a report from the Operations Coordination Center (CICO).
On August 4, during Operation "Niya" in the Tillabéri region, military forces neutralized two mercenaries who were monitoring security forces' movements.
On August 5, as part of Operation "Almahaou," security forces searched hideouts in the Sangilé and Gangara areas, neutralizing another mercenary. They also discovered and destroyed military equipment, a motorcycle, communication devices, and materials for making improvised explosive devices.
On August 6, two more terrorists were eliminated in the Say-Tamu sector and the village of Mossipaga. During Operation "Damissa" in the Falmey area, a mercenary supplying armed terrorist groups was neutralized.
That same day, during Operation "Shara," security forces on patrol in Bazazag neutralized two more militants. On the Gaya–Malgorou stretch, an offensive patrol also eliminated one terrorist and discovered two abandoned motorcycles.
In the east of the country, on August 8, three former Boko Haram militants surrendered to authorities in the Diffa region.
In mid-July, Niger's Armed Forces (FAN) carried out a series of counterterrorism operations since the beginning of the month, eliminating more than 20 militants.
In the region, affiliates of the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda have been active for more than a decade, destabilizing the situation in Mali and its neighboring countries Burkina Faso and Niger.
