Nigeria to Expand Internet Access with LEO Satellite Partnership

3-9

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with France-based satellite operator Eutelsat to deploy Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services in Nigeria. This collaboration aims to address the country's digital divide by expanding internet access, particularly in underserved regions.

LEO satellites, which orbit at altitudes of 500 to 2,000 kilometers, offer significant advantages over traditional geostationary satellites that operate much higher—at approximately 35,786 kilometers above Earth. Operating closer to the planet's surface, LEO satellites provide high-speed, low-latency internet connections, making them ideal for delivering connectivity to rural areas, supporting government operations, and enhancing business communications.

Jane Egerton-Idehen, NIGCOMSAT's Managing Director, referred to the partnership as a pivotal milestone in Nigeria's digital transformation journey and a testament to strengthening Nigeria-France relations in the field of satellite technology. By leveraging Eutelsat's state-of-the-art LEO satellite network, Nigeria is poised to position itself as a leader in satellite communications in Africa.

This initiative aligns perfectly with Nigeria's National Broadband Plan (2020–2025), which seeks to increase the country's broadband penetration to 70% by the end of 2025. The deployment of LEO satellite technology is expected to bridge the gap in connectivity, particularly in remote and underserved areas, and further drive economic growth through enhanced digital inclusion.

With the integration of cutting-edge satellite technology, Nigeria takes yet another step towards an inclusive, digitally connected future.
