Nairobi Fashion Week Becomes a Platform for Sustainable Fashion in Africa

3-1-1

Nairobi Fashion Week is gaining recognition as a hub for sustainable fashion in Africa. It highlights eco-conscious brands and designs crafted from recycled materials like secondhand curtains and denim. Innovators such as Tausi Conde of Maisha by Nisria and Jean Maurice Niyigena of Bone Koboyi are at the forefront, creating collections from discarded textiles while adhering to zero-waste principles and honoring cultural heritage.

Despite the growing interest in sustainable fashion, several challenges persist. The high cost of sourcing raw materials and competition from fast fashion and secondhand imports are significant hurdles. Designers like Sikoti Mbaitjongue of Sokolata are advocating for policies that bolster local industries, aiming to make sustainable fashion more accessible and economically viable across Africa.
