The government of Malawi has imposed restrictions on the export of maize as part of efforts to combat hunger. This was reported by the Anadolu Agency, citing the country's Secretary for Industrialization, Business, Trade, and Tourism, Charity Musonzo.
"Maize is classified as a licensed commodity under the Control of Goods Act, therefore its export without proper authorization is illegal. Any individuals or entities violating this restriction will be held accountable in accordance with the law," she stated.
In mid-October, Malawi's Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning, and Development warned that over 4 million citizens are at risk of insufficient food during the 2025-2026 lean season.
According to a study conducted by the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC), more than 4 million people, or 22% of the country's population, will be unable to meet their food needs between October and March. Approximately 3.9 million of those affected reside in rural areas.
