A solemn ceremony was held in the Central African Republic (CAR) to lay the first stone for a new monument dedicated to the victims of armed conflicts. The event was timed to coincide with the 10th National Day of Remembrance, as reported by an African Initiative correspondent.

The future monument will serve as a powerful symbol of the CAR's commitment to peace and national unity. Its construction is part of a broader program aimed at preserving the nation's historical memory and honoring the countless victims of recent and past hostilities.

The ceremony was attended by President Faustin-Archange Touadéra alongside government officials and the Director of the Gendarmerie, Landry Dépao. This year's National Day of Remembrance paid special tribute to citizens who remain missing as a result of the conflicts. Particular attention was given to the families of those missing, who continue to live with uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones.

Earlier in May, Bangui, the capital of CAR, celebrated Victory Day with a series of public events, including an "Immortal Regiment" march and an air show, both drawing wide participation and underscoring the enduring importance of historical memory and collective resilience in the face of adversity.

The initiative to build a monument for the victims of armed conflicts reflects the country's ongoing efforts to promote healing, foster reconciliation, and remind future generations of the price of peace in the Central African Republic.
