In Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, Ethiopian athlete Yomif Kejelcha set a world record in the half marathon, completing the distance in 56 minutes and 51 seconds, World Athletics announced on August 23.

Kejelcha improved the world record by 29 seconds. The result is pending official ratification. The athlete had previously set a world record over the same distance in October 2024 in Valencia, finishing the half marathon in 57 minutes and 30 seconds.

In the women's race in Buenos Aires, victory went to another Ethiopian representative — Foten Tesfay. She finished with a time of 1 hour 3 minutes 57 seconds, significantly ahead of her competitors.

In July, Kenyan athlete Emmanuel Wanyonyi broke the world record in the 1000 meters, which had stood for 27 years. He completed the distance with a time of 2:11.83 and won the Diamond League title in Monaco.
