Construction has commenced on the Katende hydroelectric power plant on the Lulua River, located in the Central Kasai province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The news was reported by RFI with reference to the country's Minister of Finance, Dudu Fwamba Likunde.
"This project involves building a modern hydroelectric power plant along with all the necessary transport and distribution infrastructure. In the initial phase, the plant will deliver 16 megawatts of power, followed by a second phase that will add an additional 32 megawatts. This significant increase in electricity supply will benefit both Central Kasai and Eastern Kasai provinces," the Minister stated.
The hydroelectric plant is expected to become operational within two years. The Katende project had previously been halted nine years ago due to funding shortages, but its resumption signals a renewed push towards energy development in the region.
This new plant is anticipated to create jobs, boost local industry, and enhance access to reliable electricity for thousands of residents. The renewed construction also highlights the government's commitment to regional development and sustainable energy.
This project follows the recent commissioning of another hydroelectric facility in Lualaba province, which was inaugurated in October 2023 and built in partnership with China. These developments support the DRC's broader efforts to modernize its energy sector and drive economic growth through improved infrastructure.
