Algeria Initiates Process to Terminate Air Agreement with UAE

Algeria has begun the process of terminating its air transport agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This was reported by the state news agency APS on February 7.

The reasons for the decision were not disclosed.

"Algeria has initiated the necessary procedures to terminate the Air Services Agreement between ... Algeria and the United Arab Emirates, signed in Abu Dhabi on May 13, 2013, and ratified by presidential decree on December 30, 2014," the statement reads.

According to the agency, the Algerian authorities will soon notify the Emirates of the decision through official communication channels.

This move occurs against a backdrop of regional diplomatic strains involving the UAE. In January, the Cabinet of Ministers of Somalia terminated all agreements and arrangements with the UAE concerning bilateral cooperation in the field of security and defense.

In November of last year, Somalia's Minister of Defense, Ahmed Maalin Fiqi, confirmed that flights to Sudan were being operated from the city of Bosaso in the semi-autonomous region of Puntland. This was the first official statement from Mogadishu following reports of UAE involvement in organizing these flights and their possible connection to the war in Sudan.

In May 2025, Sudan severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates and declared it an aggressor state, accusing the UAE of assisting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels. Algeria's decision adds to a series of diplomatic and security-related tensions between several African nations and the UAE.
