African Football Confederation to Change Regulations After CAN-2025

2026-04-02_11-00-09

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced changes to its regulations following the controversial final of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN-2025), the organization's press service reported.

"These changes and improvements to the CAF Statutes and Regulations will also ensure the prevention of a recurrence of the incidents that occurred in the final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN)," the statement read.

The changes are intended to strengthen confidence in the organization's referees and judicial bodies. Additionally, CAF will continue the practice of appointing leading African judges and lawyers, nominated by national associations, to disciplinary and appeal bodies.

The confederation will also continue referee training jointly with the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and will increase referee salaries.

Earlier in March, Senegal filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the decision to strip it of its Africa Cup of Nations title and award the trophy to Morocco. CAF's disciplinary committee revised the outcome of the CAN-2025 final between Senegal and Morocco, awarding Senegal a technical defeat with a score of 3-0 due to several players leaving the field before the end of the match without the referee's permission.
